Recycling the Future of Batteries
The Company
Back to Battery is a Delft-based climate tech startup specializing in the sustainable recycling of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries. Their patent-pending hydrometallurgical process (zero waste, no sodium sulphate, high recovery) enables the extraction of critical battery materials such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt turning waste into high-purity, battery-grade inputs.
The Mission
To enable a truly circular European battery supply chain by recovering and reintroducing materials from spent batteries into new ones, reducing dependence on raw mining, strengthening local value chains, and advancing the energy transition.
Why We Invested
- The demand for battery materials is projected to multiply dramatically (e.g., lithium ×14, nickel ×20) as EV adoption and renewable storage expand.
- New EU regulations (such as the upcoming Battery Regulation and stricter recycling mandates) increase the need for high-efficiency local recycling solutions.
- Back to Battery’s process achieves over 95% recovery of key materials and >99.5% purity, outperforming legacy technologies.
- Their solution addresses three major challenges: environmental impact, supply chain security, and cost efficiency – all fully aligned with our impact investment goals.
Key Product & Technology Highlights
Closed-loop hydrometallurgy: Reuses water and reactants internally, avoids sodium sulphate waste, and produces no CO₂ or NOₓ emissions.
Multi-chemistry flexibility: Capable of processing multiple lithium-ion chemistries (LFP, LCO, NMC, NCA, LMO).
High-purity output: Delivers battery-grade materials (>99.5% purity), ready for direct reuse in new battery production.Roland Berger | 7
Scalable & cost-efficient: Designed for low CAPEX and OPEX, outperforming incumbent recycling systems
